Creek crossings are great for hunting white tail deer. You can find an abundance of deer sign. But before you set up your stand take a good look around and make sure your creek with all of the deer sign is not winding through a ravine or narrow valley. It is definitely tempting to set up where you see the deer sign, but the wind is sure to be your enemy.
In ravines and narrow valleys the wind does not blow straight through as it does when crossing a creek in open country or slightly sloping timber. In ravines and narrow valleys the wind swirls through filling the entire ravine with your human sent. It is pretty much impossible to sit in a stand for any length of time without filling the entire area with your sent and warning any prospective deer of your presence.
Don’t be fooled with how good a creek crossing looks. When it is out of the direct flow of wind you will be sending out your calling card in the form of human sent.
At Buyritescopes.com some of our favorite hunting spots are near creek crossings with a lot of deer sign, but we always make sure we place our stands so the wind is our friend not our foe.
