vx2_4-12x50.jpgvx2_4-12x50.jpgvx2_4-12x50.jpgI don’t think you will find a hunter around that has not heard about the influene the moon has on the movements of deer. Whether or not you believe all that you hear there is some interesting data relating to deer movement and moon phases.

It is legendary that a full moon makes for tough hunting and good spot-lighting. Make sure spot lighting is legal in your area before you try it.

The other two moon phases are the first quarter and the third quarter. According to harvest data these two phases are when most hunters score, all other factors being equal. Quarter moons are productive mainly becuase the moon’s maximum geomagnetic influence is strongest at an ideal time, sunrise and sunset. This happens to occur when deer feel most comfortable and when hunter hunt hardest.

During full and new moons the moon is overhead or underfoot at midday; and during quarter moons the moon is overhead or underfoot at sunrise or sunset. At Buyritescopes.com we recommed matching a good hunting strategy to the quarter moon and you can expect to have an exceptional hunting season.

vx2_4-12x50.jpgMost hunters know scents are an important part of your hunting strategy. When you set up your tree stand you should keep the prevailing wind in your area in mind. If the prevailing wind is from the southwest then you should set your stand so the scent is blowing away from your stand and the direction from which you think the deer will come.

Serious hunters will have more than one stand ready incase the wind shifts and is not in your favor you can move to another stand that has been set to reflect a different wind direction.

Another popular way to avoid deer picking up your sent is to use a scent-eliminating soap and shampoo before every hunt, and wear clothing that has been washed in a scent-eliminating detergent. You should also avoid touching trees and limbs especially near your tree stand.

At Buyritescopes.com we believe that having a great hunt takes thought and prepration before the big day when you are ready to take that big buck home.

Hunting for sport or food is a relaxing, exciting and educational experience for hunters of all ages. There are many claims that this type of hunting has no beneficial results and therefore should be banned. However, there are many who do not understand the true purpose for hunting and therefore do not realized that sport hunting should not be banned. Education is lacking when an assumption is made stating hunting is only recreational and leaves damage without good.

Many benefits come from hunting not only to the hunter, but to the natural world as well. Without the hunter, many breeds of animals would become overpopulated and eventually die off from starvation due to the excessive numbers and lower food percentage per herd. Not only would there be an overpopulation of many animals, but there would also be a vast area for disease and inner-herd killings. In nature, it is survival of the fittest, those that are weak and old will be the first attacked, even by their own kind.

Hunting offers benefits to the hunter as well. There are the benefits of education, by watching and studying the animals, the hunter will in turn learn how they associate among themselves, their patters for breeding and migration, and their tendencies of behavior. Therefore, the hunter will not only benefit by this knowledge within his hunt but also an understanding of what animals to harvest when hunting. Sick or deformed animals often give the hunter a sense of sympathy when hunting. It is unlikely that this animal will live very long and may possibly spread its disease or deformities to the other animals or when breeding. It is easy to see why sport hunting should not be banned when taking the information from this perspective and applying it to the natural order of life.

This type of hunting also provides excitement and a chance for a relaxing connection with nature. During a hunt, the hunter is often sitting in silence and connecting with nature. This opportunity allows for the hunter to take in his surrounding and learn the area around him. Knowing the vegetation and the growth rate of the area crops is an important step to being a good hunter. This knowledge comes through conservation of the land being managed for hunting. Through this land management, the plant life and animal life become more abundant and prosperous.

Sport hunting should not be banned for lack of knowledge on the part of protesters. There are many environmental benefits to the vegetation and wildlife. The health of the animals and the life cycle that produces from healthy wildlife is important to hunters proving to produce larger, stronger wildlife without damaging their chances of survival. Hunting also brings benefit to humans through the control of the wildlife and the predatory animals that would turn to the neighborhoods when overpopulation occurs. These dangerous animals are wolves, bears, mountain lions, coyotes, and bobcats. Hunting wildlife keeps disease among wildlife at a lower rate and ensures better survival.

When you are hunting near a food source in the afternoon you may have deer lingering at the food plot when darkness falls. Usually the does and small bucks you are not interested in will be hanging around. The problem at this point is, how do you get out of your tree without spooking these deer.

Even though it may only be does or small bucks in the food plot you don’t want them alerting other deer of your location. A smart doe will be looking up for you the next time she returns. If she spots you, she’ll snort and alert other deer nearby, including any trophy buck that may be thinking of entering the field.

If this is the case you may just wait until the deer leave the food plot which can be up to an hour then you have the task of leaving the stand in the dark. If they seem to linger you may just have to spook them when you get out of your stand.

A better alternative is to place your stand along areas where the deer travel going to and from the food plot. In this case the deer do not linger near your stand yet you get the opportunity to spot them both coming and going. Whenever you are ready to leave if you are careful you will be less likely to spook feeding deer.

At Buyritescopes.com we recommend checking out the food plot before you head for your tree stand, this way you can spot deer before they spot you. Happy hunting and bring home a trophy.

leupold-vx-iii-boone-crockett-biggame-deer.jpgA little after 7 a.m. I gave a couple of grunts and waited. About 10 minutes later I saw deer legs walking through the woods, but the cover was thick and I couldn’t tell if it was a buck.

I gave a couple of estrus bleats and he grunted back to me as he continued in my direction.  I finally had a good clear shot. Using my new Leupold Riflescope I was able to make a good clean hit. I could not have been happier if I had just taken my first deer. He was a beauty with eight main points and two broken points.

I have to give credit to Leupold and their Boone and Crocket reticle scopes.  I found the big guy I was tracking, but Leupold gave me a bright clear target to bring the big guy home.

The guys at Buyritescopes.com have the best selection and the best prices of Leupold scopes around and I want to thank them for making this a great hunting season.

Foods To Attract Deer

October 14, 2008

rflmn_3-9x40-resized.jpg

Deer, in their natural habitat, do not eat “deer feed” that can be purchased at the feed store. So, left to their own devices, what do deer eat?

Deer are herbivores, meaning they only eat plants. While there are plenty of plants in the forest, not all plants provide adequate nutrition for deer.

Much like humans, deer have preferences for certain foods and will eat them whenever and wherever they find them. When these foods are not available they will move on to acceptable foods (less nutrition and less tasty, but still acceptable.) If there is a lot of competition from other deer in the area, even these food sources may become depleted and deer will be forced to eat “foods of last resort;” these are foods that are very low in nutrients, but are better than nothing. Seasonal changes also affect the availability of foods.

Types of Foods That Deer Eat

Wild Grasses

Wild grasses are only eaten when the shoots are you and tender. They are a food of last resort, and help deer survive when deer cannot find other foods.

Woody Plants and Shrubs

Deer can feed on trees and shrubs. The eat the leaves, twigs and buds of these types of plants all year around.

Forbs

Forbs are herbaceous plants (perennial, non woody plants that die every winter but produce new growth every spring). Forbs include weeds and other flowering plants. This is a proffered food source.

Nuts

Very nutritious for deer, but crops of nuts are often small, so this food source is not as reliable as forbs and grasses.

Cultivated Crops

These are crops that humans plant. These can be an important part of deer diet in areas where other food sources are limited.

Fruits

Very high in energy, deer prefer these foods, but they are usually only available during summer and early fall.

At BuyRiteScopes.com we promote knowing your deer’s habitat and local food sources in order to track and find that trophy buck to make this year’s hunt the best ever.

Leupold VX-III 3.5-10×40When looking to find the really big bucks the traditional method of using a spotting scope or binoculars can help you locate one, but locating his trail is often difficult if almost impossible.

A much more thorough method is to set up an observation post. The observation post must cover as many of the food sources as practical. Remember to keep the wind in your face and stay hidden. You should also have a good access and exit routes.

Scouting cameras is fast becoming a favorite method of locating the big bucks. Placing them on trails that enter food sources and watering holes can be very effective.

Don’t forget to keep logs of the shooter bucks and their signs, including where they were, what they were doing, wind directions, and overall weather conditions.

At Buyritescopes.com finding the right deer to shoot is as important as the rifle or scope you use when hunting deer.

vx3_4_5-14x40_silver.jpgThe three major factors in determining the size of the buck’s antlers is age, nutrition, and genetics. Since the majority of hunters has no control over the genetics of a free range heard; age and nutrition are the two factors most hunters should consider when harvesting bucks.

Even with good nutrition a yearling up to 1.5 years old will have a relatively small set of antlers. The age of a buck is the easiest, cheapest and quickest to way to get a large rack. If you are hunting on private ground where there is a limited number of hunters refraining from shooting younger bucks gives them time to grow and develop a larger rack.

Research has shown that the average yearling buck expresses only 15 to 25 percent of its antler growth potential. However, this increases to 40-50 percent at age 2.5 years, 70-75 percent at age 3.5, and up to 90 percent at age 4.5.

BuyRitescopes.com supports allowing young bucks to live another year or two before harvest, protecting antler growth and improving the enjoyment of your hunt.

Wild Turkey Hunting

October 7, 2008

Leupold VXII 4-20mmvx2_1-4x20.jpg

Confidence, persistence and a lot of patience is what you need in order to harvest a gobbler. The very first challenge concerning a wild turkey is getting close to the bird.  Experienced hunters recommend confidence when calling and paying attention to what these birds might be doing.

A friction call is recommended with these birds as they are louder and the sound will carry further in the Western prairies and mountains and that is what you want, the sound to travel great distances. Wild turkey hunters recommend that once you get close to them you should look at what they are doing and try to imitate them. When hunting these birds, patience is indeed a great virtue.

Once you have got one turkey to answer your call, we strongly suggest that you stay where you are and be patient, making sure that he will come towards your way. Locating these birds is where the hunting actually starts; start by looking near water sources because that is the place where most of the turkeys are, mostly due to the reason that in many places we find drought conditions and these birds need water everyday just like humans do.

Once you have called in your turkey be prepared to make the kill with a Leupold turkey plex riflescope from Buyritescopes.com.

Quality Deer Management

October 6, 2008

Leupold Riflescope VX-II 4-12x50Rugged Riflescopes by LeupoldMore and more frequently you hear hunters interested in managing their properties and deer herds in order to increase the number of bucks and the size of the availabe bucks for harvest. Deer management is gaining in popularity and is commonly called Quality Deer Management or QDM.

To keep it simple QDM is an effort to balance the available deer herds with their habitats while improving the adult sex ratio with number of older bucks to younger bucks in the available deer population. This effort requires four essential steps: 1. monitor the herd, 2. manage the herd, 3. manage the habitat, and 4. manage the hunters.

Herd management is among the most important in QDM. Hunters must determine the number of does they should harvest as well as the best way to protect young bucks to enable them to reach an older age. When you harvest bucks according to age you are protecting young bucks and you also add a whole new dimension to your deer hunting experience.

At Buyritescopes.com we support Quality Deer Management in order to preserve quality deer hunting now and for future generations.
