Once you have have found the perfect riflescope and made your purchase you are ready to mount the scope. Be sure to mount your scope using recommended manufacturer’s mounts. But you are not ready to hunt yet, you need to sight in the scope to get the full benefit while hunting.
In addition to your rifle, scope, ammunition, and targets you should use a quality bore sighter.
To sight in your scope find a place suitable for practice shooting and set up a target at a distance of 100 yards.
Making sure the rifle is not loaded and the breech is open, install the boresighter into the muzzle of the rifle barrel according to the manufacturers instructions.
Look through the scope as if you are going to shoot. Aline the crosshairs of the scope with the crosshairs of the bore sighter. Adjust the elevation up or down, and the windage right to left in order to line up both the horizontal and vertical crosshairs.
Remove the bore sighter from the rifle’s muzzle and load one round into the rifle. Aim at the target you set up at 100 yards and fire one round. Check your target and make adjustments by repeating the previous steps until you are able to fire a round and hit the target with accuracy. (Note using quality binoculars can make the target checking process faster and easier)
If you continue to have difficulty hitting the target move the target closer in 25 yard increments until you can hit it consistantly accurately. Once you are shooting confidently at that range you can begin to move the target away in 25 yard increments and continue.
Once you are shooting consistant shots use rounds of several different brands of ammunition. When you have found the ammunition that gives you the tighest grouping of shots, that is the ammunition you will want to continue to use with that rifle.
Fire rounds of the ammunition you chose at the target. Adjust the elevation so the shots hit the target approximately 3 inches above the bullseye. Adjust the windage so the shots are dead on center. Your scope and rifle are now sighted in.
